When the Massachusetts Militia spent the 25th overall pick in the Year One draft on Andrew Wiewel, they knew they were getting a premier goaltending prospect. Now in his second season, Wiewel has more than lived up to those lofty expectations as the backbone of the Militia's success between the pipes.
The 31-year-old native of Canada has been a model of consistency and excellence. This season, he has posted stellar numbers of a 23-7-1 record, 2.30 goals against average, and .934 save percentage while logging over 1,800 minutes.
"Andy is the complete package - big, athletic, ultra-competitive," said Militia goalie coach Jason Muzzatti. "But what really separates him is his mental toughness and preparation. He's always all over film study and leaves no stone unturned in getting ready for each opponent."
Wiewel's work ethic and mental fortitude have paid major dividends. In 86 career games, he owns a sparkling 53-19-6 record with a 2.28 GAA and .932 save percentage. His consistent excellence has made him a Cult hero in Boston.
The 5'11", 207-pound workhorse was a rare draft commodity - an elite goaltending prospect who has lived up to the hype. Few players at his position can match Wiewel's impressive career stats and championship pedigree.
Under contract for one more season at a $2.01 million cap hit, Wiewel remains in his prime and focused on bringing a title to the Militia faithful.
"This group has a legitimate chance to make a real run," Wiewel said. "We have the talent, the work ethic, and the right mindset. If we keep pushing in the same direction, there's no reason we can't be the last team standing."
With their crease fortified by a perennial Cult MVP candidate, the Militia will continue leaning on Wiewel's brilliance as they chase hockey's ultimate prize.
